Applicants should have an undergraduate major in History or a strong minor in the field, with a grade point average above 3.0. Candidates for graduate study in History who have a limited undergraduate background in History but show a strong intellectual potential may be admitted on a provisional basis, with the requirement that they take several undergraduate courses in History to give them the necessary foundation for graduate study. High enough grades in those courses will serve to waive the undergraduate credit requirement. For applicants to the Public History Program, work in Public History, whether on a paid or volunteer basis, especially enhances their application.
Most applicants to the graduate programs in History apply for admission for the following fall semester. To receive full consideration for admission and financial aid, students applying for admission for the fall must submit all application materials by March 1. The admissions committee will start to review complete application files at that time and decision letters will be mailed out in early April.
Applicants who do not meet the March 1 deadline will be considered for admission once their files become complete and if space is available, but they are unlikely to receive financial aid. Those completed application files will be accepted until July 1 for fall admission and November 1 for spring admission; these are absolute deadlines.

The Department of History
has a limited amount of financial aid available. This financial aid is available in the form of assistantships as well as tuition scholarships. Assistantships include tuition, fees, and a stipend of approximately $2600 per semester. Graduate assistants help professors in the Department with their teaching and research on a part-time basis of eight to ten hours per week. While only a small number of students are awarded assistantships, many more receive scholarships for a portion of their tuition. Currently, many students receive some form of financial aid. Also, graduate students are eligible for federal and state loan programs.
