MAYER, Holly A. (College of William and Mary), Associate Professor and Chair of History. Dr. Mayer's research field is late eighteenth-century America. She is especially interested in civil-military relations during the War for Independence and the evolution of American character. Her monograph, Belonging to the Army: Camp Followers and Community during the American Revolution (University of South Carolina Press, 1996) is a path-breaking study of the Continental Army as a community. Dr. Mayer teaches courses on early America that emphasize cultural and political issues, including the relationships between European, African, and Native American peoples, gender roles, intellectual trends, and the development of American identity and government. She also teaches the history of early United States foreign policy. Her commitment to teaching extends beyond Duquesne's classrooms, as demonstrated by the text, For the Record: A Documentary History of America (which she co-edited with David E. Shi; published by W.W. Norton & Co., 1999, 2004) that has beenreleased in a third, revised edition in 2007.
