RISHEL, Joseph F. (Pittsburgh). Professor of History. Dr. Rishel’s field of historical specialization is American social and urban history. His research has focused on Pittsburgh's old elite and, more recently, on the history of Duquesne University. His first book, published in 1991 by the University of Pittsburgh Press, is Founding Families of Pittsburgh: The Evolution of a Regional Elite, 1760-1910. In 1998, he published The Spirit That Gives Life: The History of Duquesne University. A dynamic and popular teacher, Professor Rishel offers graduate courses on 20th century America, urban history, as well as the introductory course for all new graduate history students.
