Theses and Dissertations

Master's candidates following Plan A must present a thesis, and all Ph.D. candidates must present a dissertation which meets the requirements of the Graduate School. Master's candidates who are working on their theses register for thesis credits; doctoral candidates register for dissertation credits. The program or department establishes the academic credit value, and partial credit is not permitted. After completing course credits, the student is to register for at least one dissertation credit each semester until all credits are taken. Students continuing to work on the thesis or dissertation beyond that point are required to register for continuous registration each semester until the work is completed and accepted.

Approved theses and dissertations follow the "Thesis and Dissertation Instructions" available in the back of this Handbook and in the Graduate School office.

An abstract must accompany each dissertation and thesis. Abstracts are published in Dissertation Abstracts or Masters Abstracts without further editing or revision.

Restriction on Time
Candidates working outside the University may be limited in the number of hours they may take during any particular session. No part-time student can anticipate completing the minimum course requirements in less than twoyears.

Statute of Limitations
All work leading toward a master's degree must be completed within six years of matriculation.

All work acceptable towards the Ph.D. degree must be completed within the period of seven years after the Ph.D. qualifying examination or other such point identified in the specific program. Extensions are granted only under exceptional circumstances with approval of the Dean based on the recommendation of the director of the program.

Language Requirements
Language requirements and options are set by the individual programs. However, standard options for fulfilling the language requirements are:
