What do I need to do to apply?
All programs accept the University's free on-line graduate application form. Additional materials and specific requirements are found on each program's respective Web site. However, all departments require some kind of standardized test (GRE or MAT), as well as transcripts showing your undergraduate degree(s) and grades and letters of recommendation.

Can I still apply if I haven't yet received my bachelor's degree or if I don't want to pursue a degree at Duquesne?
Students in the final year of their undergraduate program can be accepted provisionally until the Graduate School receives an official transcript listing the degree. Students who do not wish to apply to a program but wish to enroll in a course or two may be admitted as "special" students. Students in good standing at another accredited graduate school may be admitted as temporary transfer students for one term, although the Psychology Department does not accept temporary transfers.

How much does graduate school cost?
Current rates for tuition and fees are available from the Graduate Office, 412-396-6400, fax 412-396-5265, 215 College Hall, 600 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15282.

Is financial aid available?
Full-time graduate students may qualify for financial aid such as teaching or research assistantships and full and partial fellowships. Some aid is also available for part-time students. You can apply for financial aid on the application form. In addition, domestic students are eligible for federally funded loans.

What about housing?
The university provides special floors in residence halls for graduate and law students. Many graduate students live off campus either in nearby apartment houses or in one of Pittsburgh's many interesting neighborhoods. Housing costs in Pittsburgh are quite reasonable and there is a wide range of options available for off-campus living. The Office of Commuter Affairs maintains lists of off-campus housing.

Can I transfer credits into Duquesne?
While policies differ from program to program, most will accept up to six credits of course work taken outside of the program. Psychology accepts, at most, three external credits.

What constitutes a full-time load in graduate school?
Generally, full-time graduate students take three courses (nine credits) per semester. The workload is much heavier for graduate courses, so more is not recommended (although an occasional brave student enrolls in four courses.)

Can I pursue my graduate education on a part-time basis?
Yes, most programs accept part-time graduate students and make every effort to assist them in completing their graduate studies. Psychology is solely a full-time program, however.

Are classes scheduled at convenient times for part-time students?
Many programs in the McAnulty Graduate School schedule their graduate courses either fully or mostly at night. Communication, History, Theology, Computational Mathematics, and the Policy Center are all late afternoon or evening programs. English, Psychology and Philosophy offer some courses in the evenings. Evening courses generally run from 6:00- 8:40 p.m., one night a week.

What are graduate courses like at Duquesne?
Graduate courses are mostly small, rarely exceeding 20 students in size. The courses are generally designed to insure active participation on the part of the students.

Are there employment opportunities for graduate students on or off campus?
Students who qualify may apply for on-campus federal work-study positions, but there is quite a bit of competition for these slots. Because Duquesne is located in the heart of Pittsburgh, there is a wide range of part-time, off-campus employment opportunities available. The Career Services Center has lists of both on- and offcampus jobs. However, graduate students must carefully evaluate the effect of off-campus work on their academic performance.

What about parking?
Unlike many urban universities, Duquesne has adequate on-campus parking. Students can purchase a permit by the semester or by the year. Those attending primarily at night can purchase an evening permit. In addition, students with valid IDs can park in the Forbes Avenue garage for a flat daily rate.

What other campus services and activities are available to graduate students?
As students at the University, graduate students are eligible to make use of all facilities. Students living on campus can use the Health Service; non-residents can, as well, by paymg a reasonable semester fee. Graduate students may use the recreational facilities of the fabulous new Power Center, may attend all of the many University activities, may use the various counseling services on campus, and may become as active on campus as they choose. Many departments have graduate student organizations. Duquesne encourages its graduate students to become active members of the campus community and participants in the life of the University.
