Section Four: Academic Policies

4.1 Effective Catalog
The Undergraduate Catalog is an official publication of the University. Degree requirements are those stipulated in the catalog of the year in which a student matriculates. Major and minor requirements are those stipulated in the catalog of the year in which a student declares a major or minor.

4.2 Class Attendance
Students are expected to observe the attendance policies of each class they are taking. If illness or personal or family crisis requires a student to miss more than one day of class, the student is responsible for contacting his/her advisor. The advisor will notify the student's instructors in writing of the situation. The student remains responsible for speaking with the instructors regarding missed work. Similarly, students who are absent while officially representing the University, as athletes, debaters, performers, or in some other capacity, have the responsibility to make arrangement in advance with their instructors for work missed while they are away.

4.3 Academic Load
While a 12-credit schedule in a regular semester is considered full-time study, students may normally carry five courses (15-17 credits) in one semester. Students on academic probation may not take more than 15 credits. Students wishing to take more than 18 credits must have the Dean's approval.

Academic loads for non-native speakers of English enrolled in degree programs are determined in accordance with the University's English language proficiency requirements and in consultation with the English as a Second Language Program advisor.

4.4 Classification of Students
Freshman: fewer than 30 credits completed.
Sophomore: 30-59 credits completed.
Junior: 60-89 credits completed.
Senior: 90 or more credits completed.

4.5 Dean's List
The Dean's List is determined by a student's academic record for any one semester.

To be eligible for this distinction, the student must meet the following criteria:
* Complete a full-time schedule (12 credits exclusive of pass/fail credits).
* Receive no grade lower than a C regardless of how many credits have been taken.
* Receive no Incomplete grades regardless of how many credits have been taken.
* Earn a minimum grade point average of 3.50.

The different levels of honors are as follows:
* Honors 3.50-4.00

4.6 Residency Requirement
The last 30 credits must be taken in residence at the University.

4.7 Writing Intensive Courses
Every graduating student must have completed a minimum of four Writing Intensive courses beyond the two-semester University Core writing sequence. At least two of the courses must be taken in the student's major field. A "W" after the course number in the Schedule of Classes booklet identifies courses as writing intensive.

4.8 Non-Arts Electives
Except for those students who choose to complete an inter-school program or joint degree program, a maximum of 12 credits in courses outside of the College of Liberal Arts may be applied to the B.A. or B.S. degree.

4.9 Sequential Courses
Sequential courses must be taken in proper sequence. Credit will not be given for courses that are prerequisites for courses the student has already successfully completed.
