Dr. Kelly is professor of Theology
and Health Care Ethics and serves as the director
of the Health Care Ethics Program. His primary
interest in recent research and publication has
been the application of theological ethics to
areas of current importance on health care.
He has lectures widely to both
theological and medical communities on health
care ethics, especially concerning issues of forgoing
treatment, resource allocation, and cost containment.
Research and publication projects address these
areas as well as genetic engineering, organ transplantation,
and certain methodological questions in moral
theology.
His publications include three
books, The Emergence of Roman Catholic Medical
Ethics in North America (1979), A Theological
Basis for Health Care and Health Care Ethics (1985),
and Critical Care Ethics: Treatment Decisions
in American Hospitals (1991), as well as numerous
articles on moral theology and medical ethics
in various professional journals. Dr. Kelly is
the 1993 recipient of Duquesne University's "Presidential
Award for Excellence in Scholarship." He
is currently finishing a new book on Health Care
Ethics for Georgetown University Press.
Dr. Kelly serves as consultant
to a number of hospital Ethics Committees. He
is an Ethics Consultant at the Mercy Hospital
of Pittsburgh, where he works in the clinical
context.
