Media Management and Production

The Duquesne University Media Management and Production major prepares students to be creative and conscientious media practitioners and managers.  Courses are taught by faculty who combine an academic expertise in the field with a background of professional media experience.  Faculty teach critical and theoretic analysis of the media along with the production skills students need to work in the industry.

Students in this major gain a thorough understanding of the three major components of media studies: Audiences, Institution, and Messages.  Courses explore how media messages have impact on citizens; what effects the business of media had on content; and what the ethical obligations communicators have in a democratic society. Students in the major develop writing, production and performance skills that empower them to succeed in the media job market.  They also develop knowledge of the role of media in the larger society, which helps them savvier consumers of media.

In order to become good practitioners and managers in the mass media, students need to consider the forces behind the evolution of media into its current commercial system, and the implications of that system in creating an informed and enlightened citizenry.   They need to understand the legal rights and responsibilities of media in a democratic society.  Ethics is a cornerstone of the curriculum and its capstone course.  As befits a program housed in a Catholic university, the Media Management and Production major develops a in-depth understanding of the media’s ethical challenges and examines means to meet those challenges.
