The Ad Club provides students the opportunity to put learning into practice. This is done through participation in a national advertising competition, presentations by and networking opportunities with advertising professionals, and discussions of major issues in the rapidly evolving advertising and marketing industries.
The award-winning Duquesne Debate Team competes in intercollegiate debate tournaments throughout the Northeast and Midwest. The team is open to all undergraduates from all schools within the University. No experience required (although it is always welcome). Debaters can compete in Novice and Varsity divisions. If you have an interest in voicing your views on the most significant political, economic, and social issues of the day while acquiring professional-level research and presentation skills consider joining the debate team.
The MODUS Group is a student run club under the Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts, established to provide students practical experience designing and developing new media products and services. MODUS sets up partnerships with departments under the University and with outside non-profit organizations to provide services commonly found in the Web, Print, and Multimedia industries. In addition to the professional development opportunities, MODUS gives students the ability to better acquaint themselves with one another, creating a strong social and professional network that will carry over into their professional careers.
The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) open to all undergraduates from all schools within the University. In weekly meetings, students who join PRSSA create, develop, and implement an actual public relations campaign for a local non-profit organization. In addition, PRSSA sponsors networking opportunities in the form of talks and roundtable discussions led by Pittsburgh's top public relations professionals. Develop your portfolios, get your work seen and heard, join PRSSA.
The Society of Professional Journalists is a national professional-collegiate association dedicated to the promotion of quality journalism. It offers students regular opportunities to meet with top industry professionals, along with training and access to internships and scholarships. The Duquesne SPJ chapter sponsors speakers, organizes field trips and participates in regional and national conferences. Each semester, SPJ publishes Off the Bluff, a high-quality glossy magazine that features the best stories produced in the JMA program’s news writing classes. The chapter is advised by Dr. Mike Dillon. You can contact him at dillonm@duq.edu.
